A month or two ago I noticed a twitter friend of mine, and respected designer, Dee Sadler talking about a new conference she was planning. She's based in Kansas City, and having found out how active their development and design user groups are, I was intrigued. This Designer/Developer workflow conference sounded awesome. It wasn't just for developers, they wanted to target designers as well. Having started my career as a designer I decided to submit a topic. I just found out that I was accepted to speak! I'll be presenting a workflow topic covering how to build AIR applications with jQuery and ColdFusion. If you're in the midwest and you're looking to learn a wide range of topics, come check it out.

On January 20th I gave a presentation to the Bay Area ColdFusion User Group (BACFUG) on Building AIR Applications with ColdFusion and jQuery. It went well, with about 30 or 40 people in attendance, both live and via Acrobat Connect. I just wanted to take a moment to post my code samples, as well as a link to watch the recorded presentation. Hope you enjoy, and don't forget to check out some of my other AIR posts.

Way back in May, at cf.Objective(), I met a great guy named Sid. He shared with me that he was involved in the Bay Area ColdFusion User Group way out in the country of California. Sid told me that he was impressed with my jQuery presentation and asked if I would be interested in speaking to BACFUG. Fast forward 7 months and it seems that they've finally been forced to make good on their offer and let me speak. I'm sure it's because Sean Corfield can't be bothered to make the drive into the Adobe offices, but who am I to complain. (yes, I'm just kidding).

The next 2 weekends are going to be super busy here in Nashville. Or maybe I should say busy for me in general as I'll be going out of town for both of them.

Adobe announced that it would be putting all of the content presented at this year's MAX conference online, for free. Yep, that means that you can learn from the same presenters as the people who paid thousands of dollars to attend MAX. Speakers like Christian Cantrell, Raymond Camden, Russell Brown, Grant Skinner, and much more.

By now the entire ColdFusion community has read the story of Ben's altercation with an unruly .NET developer. He finally admits at the end of the story that it's just fabrication. I was with him this weekend and wanted to tell the real story behind his injury. Sorry Ben...here it goes.

What the hell...here's another wallpaper. Also inspired by the user group tour, this one's got to do with the killer shirts that Adobe handed out to everyone. It features this sweet logo (found in the middle of the wallpaper), on a black t-shirt. I just started playing around with this one and this is what I came up with...hope you like it. Standard, widescreen, and iPhone versions available.

I've got a new wallpaper for you guys. This one's inspired by the recent Adobe ColdFusion User Group tour stop in Nashville promoting Centaur (ColdFusion 9) and Bolt (ColdFusion Builder). While Greg Wilson was flipping between applications, I kept catching a glimpse of the Bolt icon. I immediately thought that it would make a fantastic wallpaper and that's just what I did. This one's inspired by what I saw on screen, but doesn't necessarily represent the final artwork for Bolt. Standard, widescreen, and iPhone versions available.

Greg Wilson was in Nashville last night for the 2009 Adobe ColdFusion/Flex User Group Tour. He presented to a group of about 60 people at the Dave Ramsey campus in Cool Springs, TN. There was free food, drinks, and lots of great swag; both from Adobe, and from Dave Ramsey (thanks to both companies for the great stuff). The event got started at 7pm with Greg taking the stage around 7:30. He spoke for about 2 hours and covered lots of great features from ColdFusion 9 and the recently, publicly, named ColdFusion Builder (aka Bolt). Since I read blogs, follow mailing lists, and twitter religiously there wasn't a ton of stuff that I hadn't already heard about, but there were a few new features that I'd like to mention that really got the wheels in my head turning. I'll mention 3 of them in this post.

You may remember the ColdFusion Bolt wallpaper that I released a while back. I designed it right after the announcement that Adobe was developing a ColdFusion IDE. Adobe will also be releasing the next version of ColdFusion, codenamed Centaur. This past weekend I decided that my site was a little light on design flavored posts so I whipped up this wallpaper to commemorate the pending release of ColdFusion 9. I've also written my first Photoshop tutorial documenting the steps I took to design the wallpaper! So dig in and enjoy...you can download the wallpaper below.

Over the weekend I took the time to add TEN new services to ShrinkURL. In addition, because my AIR application Shrinkadoo uses shrinkURL's API, Shrinkadoo now has access to those SAME services, with no update required. The new services are Adjix, Lincr, PiURL, Trakz, Idek, PeaURL, ChilpIt, PntMe, MooURL and HREFin. Use them well.

I can finally announce what I've been working on for the last few weeks. You might already know of the shrinkURL CFC I wrote, and released on RIAForge. But I'm ready to announce the next phase of that process, Shrinkadoo, jQuery / ColdFusion powered URL shortening AIR application.

It's been a while since I've written an update for shrinkURL, but this is a pretty good one. I've added seven new services: ShortIE, Short.to, W3t, EasyURL, BudURL, Tr.im, and URLZen (give it up for Nashville), and I've rewritten the demo interface. Instead of creating a short URL for each service supported by shrinkURL, you can now choose only the one you want. Check out the new demo. As always, you can download the project from RIAForge.

It seems that many beginning ColdFusion programmers are confused by the range of means by which arguments can be passed into a ColdFusion method. So here's a quick post to explain the various ways which can be used, and why you might select one over another.

I just found out last night that I'll be speaking at cf.Objective() this year. The title of my presentation will be "jQuery & AIR - Desktop Development for the Front End Designer"! I know, I know...I'm super excited too. I've spoken at ColdFusion User Group meetings before, I've led Lunch-n-Learns at my company, but this will be the first time I've spoken at a respected conference and I'm totally stoked. In addition to speaking this year, this will be my first chance to experience the conference as well as Minneapolis itself. This year looks like it will be amazing. The list of speakers is a who's who of ColdFusion developers. I just wanted to publicly thank Nic Tunney and the cf.Objective() board for approving my presentation. I promise it'll be great!

Just a note to say that shrinkURL has been updated from v0.2 to v0.3.1 as of today. New zip file is available on RIAForge. Thanks to Adam Tuttle for adding some new functionality, and some improvements in error trapping, and URL matching.
