First steps into iPhone Development with PhoneGap, XUI JS, and Emile

So I've finally taken the plunge and started working on an honest to God iPhone application. Up until now it's just been reading about the process, dabbling with XCode, or talking to other like-minded individuals who were also in the same boat. The application I'm building will be a mobile version of Whiskerino, the bi-annual beard contest I've been a part of since 2001. It's not meant to be a replacement for the website, but more of a complement. It'll feature many of the same features, reading (and posting to) the chat window, and browsing photos, as well as being able to post your own photo. None of that is all that revolutionary. The big news is that I've decided to take the low(er) road and skip learning Objetive-C for now and use the PhoneGap framework.

Adobe announced that it would be putting all of the content presented at this year's MAX conference online, for free. Yep, that means that you can learn from the same presenters as the people who paid thousands of dollars to attend MAX. Speakers like Christian Cantrell, Raymond Camden, Russell Brown, Grant Skinner, and much more.

This is absolutely huge. Adobe's big marketing conference MAX is going on this week. In today's opening keynote Adobe dropped a bombshell and announced that developers will be able to write Actionscript 3 based applications in Flash Professional CS5 (coming to beta at the end of the year), and compile those apps for the iPhone. They even showed a handful of apps built using this process that are already available in the app store RIGHT NOW.

I've had this collection of links in my inbox for a while so I thought I'd blog them. Mostly for me, so that I don't lose them, but also for you, the reader, in hopes that you also benefit from other people's work.

Big thanks to everyone who came out to the iPhone BoF CFUnited. As promised, here's a list of some of the resources that Dan, Josh, and myself came up with. Please feel free to add your resources in the comments. One thing to note, Josh Nathanson gave me a post-BoF response on Adobe's Flash player relationship with other mobile device manufacturers. You can read about Adobe's deal with Android here.

After 2 years of patience, and envy, and longing, I'm now an iPhone owner. I've been monitoring blogs, and forums, and Twitter and I have a good array of apps that I'd like to try, but now I'm asking you, my friends, and readers to suggest other apps for me to try. This post is short, but I hope for lots of comments. Let me have it!

New ColdFusion 9 wallpaper

ColdFusion wallpaper thumbnail You may remember the ColdFusion Bolt wallpaper that I released a while back. I designed it right after the announcement that Adobe was developing a ColdFusion IDE. Adobe will also be releasing the next version of ColdFusion, codenamed Centaur. This past weekend I decided that my site was a little light on design flavored posts so I whipped up this wallpaper to commemorate the pending release of ColdFusion 9. I've also written my first Photoshop tutorial documenting the steps I took to design the wallpaper! So dig in and enjoy...you can download the wallpaper below.

Joshua Cyr, Dan Vega, and myself will be leading the iPhone development BoF at this year's cf.Objective() conference. If you're planning on attending, and have an interest in developing apps for the iPhone platform then come hang out with us at 7pm on Friday the 15th. If you're on the fence about whether to come to the conference, then maybe knowing that other developers, just like yourself, are interested in building iPhone apps will tip the scales. Come join us at cf.Objective().

A pure PC guy on the iPhone SDK, XCode, and Interface Builder

About 2 months ago, a friend of mine and I got into an animated discussion about iPhone development. Now I don't have one, but my manager Aaron West once called me the "most knowledgeable non-iPhone owner in the world". I follow the news, the announcements, and even watched the entire iPhone 3.0 OS coverage live. In multiple browser windows. Anyway, my friend has this idea for an iPhone application. The market is niche, but releasing it into the App Store could make both of us some money, plus it would help me gain valuable skills that are uber hot right now
