I like to read. A lot. More than most people. I enjoy knowing things, even if those things are fiction...with elves...or the undead...or dragons. I really like dragons. I also love keeping lists of things that I readq. So you can imagine that when I found out about Goodreads I was thrilled. I was even more excited when I saw that they had a Reading Challenge which let you set some arbritrary goal for reading, and then track your progress as you mark books as "read". Last year I read 52 books, or an average of a book a week. That's pretty good, but I started the challenge late, around March or April, and wanted to really challenge myself. So I set out to read 100 books in 2014. I hit 120 yesterday. Here's my 2014 reading challenge Zeitgeist.

you have read 120 of 100 books. A Goodreads reading challenge

Most read months

Here's a histogram of the months of the year. You can see that I started off strong, waned during the summer months, then pulled it off at the end. I was reading lots of Charles Stross during the summer and his books sort of drained me a little.

  • 12 - January
  • 14 - February
  • 14 - March
  • 10 - April
  • 9 - May
  • 6 - June

Pages Read

41,514. That's a lot of pages. The longest book I read this year was The House of Hades by Rick Riordan at 597 pages. While the shortest was a delightful read: a short tale called If Dragon's Mass Eve Be Cold And Clear by Ken Scholes which you can read for free on Tor.com. The average page length was 345 pages and the page breakdown was as follows:

  • 1 - 1-99
  • 11 - 100-199
  • 25 - 200-299
  • 43 - 300-399
  • 28 - 400-499
  • 12 - 500-599

Audiobooks Heard

Lots of people asked me how I was able to get through so many books, so quickly. I read faster than many, but I'm not a speed reader, I just have a system. I listen to audiobooks on the way to and from work, at double speed. it takes some getting used to, but it turns a 10-12 hour commitment into 5-6 hours. I can generally finish 2-4 audiobook chapters a day, and complete a book in about 1 1/2 weeks. I also read lots of eBooks on my iPhone. I read those while I'm eating breakfast, when I'm putting my kids to bed (while I'm waiting for them to fall asleep with the lights off). Finally I have a paper book that I read while I'm on the couch, or in bed at night. Of the 120 books I read this year, 32 were audiobooks, including 3 complete series, The Magicians, The Peculiar, and The Lunar Chronicles.

As a wrap up, here's the complete list of books for your perusal.
